It was always Councillor Drayton’s ambition to stage such an awards night when she took office back in May. Sponsored by The Sheffield Telegraph, Sheffield City Hall and Sheffield International Venues along with a number of other sponsors, Councillor Drayton, the city’s 110th and 13th female Lord Mayor, wanted to highlight the contribution of women in various walks of life as part of the International Women's Day week, which has been celebrated world wide since the early 1900’s.
Its origins are to be found in the struggle for women’s suffrage and equal rights. Women in Sheffield celebrated the day on March 7th. By highlighting the achievements of Sheffield’s women of inspiration, Sheffield’s Lord Mayor Jackie Drayton hopes to inspire female students and other young women, including those from ethnic communities.

“We have picked categories which will enable us to honour inspirational women from all walks of life. Women have made a difference but I think there is a lot that is hidden and I want to make a statement and focus on them. It’s not just the famous women. It’s the women who are often doing things for nothing…because they want to.’’
Said Councillor Drayton.

Each piece was individually designed and manufactured by Sheffield designer Jessica Briggs, then hallmarked and laser engraved with the winner’s name by the Sheffield Assay Office.
